# UAE visa cancellation grace period, read from the paper > After an employment visa is cancelled, the stay window depends on category. The date on the cancellation paper, not a single remembered number, tells you when an overstay fine can start. 28 September 2026 Expat Pocket Editorial A UAE visa cancellation grace period is the stay window after an employment residence permit is cancelled, before later days count as overstay. It is not one number for every resident. In practice the date on your own cancellation paper is the date to plan around, even when two official pages describe the window differently. ICP, the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security, sets the federal rules. GDRFA does the equivalent work for permits issued in Dubai. ## What the grace window is The window is time to stay legally after a residence permit expires or is cancelled, before you count as an overstayer. During those days the daily overstay fine does not apply yet. It is not extra validity on the old visa. The UAE government portal gives residents a flexible grace period, up to 6 months depending on category, to arrange a new visa or leave. That is not a promise that every cancelled file lasts 6 months. You cannot work on the strength of the grace window, you cannot sponsor others, and you cannot use the expired document as ID. The general provisions note treats the window as lawful stay, not as a live permit. ## Why there is no single day count After an employment residence visa is cancelled, ICP still sorts the file by category. The same published counts cover a permit that expires. Golden, Green, and Blue Residence holders, and their family members, get 180 days. A Green Visa is in that 180 day group. Skilled workers in occupational levels 1 to 3, and property owners, get 90 days. Permits held with a guarantor or host get 60 days. Other categories get 30 days, and the notes say this group covers most standard employment visas. Many guides still quote an older 30 day rule. The category on the cancellation is what places a file in a row. The notes include a cancellation paper that showed 16 days. That figure is not a published category, and it is shorter than the 30 days often expected on a standard employment file. Do not correct the paper in your head. Use the printed date, and ask GDRFA in Dubai or ICP if it looks wrong. **The date printed on the cancellation paper** wins when the chart and the paper disagree. ## Dependents after the sponsor visa ends Dependents are not required to leave immediately when a sponsor's residence visa is cancelled or expires. The [family visa page](/information-and-services/visa-and-emirates-id/residence-visas/residence-visa-for-family-members.md) gives them a 6 month grace period from the date their visa expires or is cancelled, so they can obtain a new residence permit. They can remain while applying for a new residence permit or a new sponsor. ICP sorts dependents by category, on the [ICP residency service](/services-details.md). Family members of Golden, Green, and Blue holders sit in the 180 day group. Another category of cancelled sponsorship can mean 90, 60, or 30 days. The family page states one figure. ICP states a range that can be as short as 30 days. The official extracts we filed do not make those wordings match, so the dependent's own paper is the date to plan around. If the family is sponsored under a Golden Visa rather than a standard employment visa, the notes give those family members the same 180 days as the holder. That status is tied to the Golden Visa, not to the former employer. ## When the overstay fine starts Overstay begins when the grace period ends. The cancellation notes say a fine of AED 50 per day applies starting the day after the grace period ends, for every day you remain in the UAE without a valid status. Days inside the window are not fined. The [general provisions page](/information-and-services/visa-and-emirates-id/Visa-information/general-provisions-for-the-residence-visa.md) sets that same AED 50 per day once an entry visa, residence permit, exit permit, or newborn registration stays expired. On a cancelled residence file, the trigger is still the end of the grace window. The Emirates ID card is a different clock. The [ICP FAQ](/faq.md) says the late renewal fine of AED 20 per day starts 30 days after the card's expiry, and advises applying at least 30 days before the card expires. That 30 day card note is not the residence grace period. Card steps sit in the [Emirates ID process overview](/blog/emirates-id-process-expat-overview.md). ## What to keep in front of you Copy the lines off the paper before you trust a memory of 30 days for everyone. - Category named on the cancellation, when it is printed - Last day of the window, as printed - The sponsor cancellation date, if a spouse or child holds a linked visa - A fresh status read, with the [UAE visa status check guide](/blog/uae-visa-status-check-guide.md) - A calendar mark on that printed last day, in the same habit as a [visa renewal calendar](/blog/visa-renewal-calendar-habit-uae.md) If the printed window sits outside 30, 60, 90, and 180 days, keep that date and ask ICP or GDRFA Dubai about the mismatch. The fine figure these notes repeat is AED 50 per day, and it starts the day after the grace period ends.
