First week in Dubai as an expat: a calm day-by-day checklist
What to prioritise in your first seven days in Dubai — SIM, temporary housing, paperwork spine, and one small social anchor — without finishing the whole city.
Your first week in Dubai as an expat is not the time to "see everything." It is the time to build a legal and life spine so week two is not pure firefighting.
This is a calm day-by-day checklist for people landing for work, family, or a free-zone path — not a tourist itinerary.
Week one is for ground, not for perfect furniture and a perfect social calendar.
What "done enough" means by day 7
You are doing fine if you have:
- A working local number (or a clear plan for OTPs)
- A safe place to sleep with a written path (hotel / temp / lease draft)
- One folder (digital + paper) for passport, entry, and employer papers
- One person or room you can message without megagroup noise
You do not need: full furniture, perfect neighbourhood, every bank, every mall.
Day 0–1 — land and stabilise
- Charge phone, get sleep, drink water.
- Confirm where you sleep the next 3–7 nights.
- Save HR / relocation contact and your temporary address in one note.
- Photograph passport bio page and entry record.
Day 2–3 — SIM + map the admin load
Local connectivity reduces friction for OTPs and maps.
Day 4–5 — housing clarity (not perfection)
If you are house-hunting:
- Walk candidates at 8am and 8pm
- Ask who handles Ejari, deposit, and cheques
- Prefer written drafts over "we will sort it later"
If housing is company-arranged, still record the building rules and DEWA contact.
Day 6–7 — one bank path + one human anchor
Many banks want residency papers. Still start the path: which bank HR uses, which documents to scan, when you can book.
Then pick one calm social channel:
- A neighbourhood or language room
- One recurring activity
- Not five WhatsApp megagroups
Day-by-day spine
| Day | Focus |
|---|---|
| 0–1 | Sleep + folder + temp address |
| 2–3 | SIM + appointment list |
| 4–5 | Housing clarity / building rules |
| 6–7 | Bank path + one social anchor |
